Take a Digital Vacation

Check out these webcams.  To name a few locations would be Niagra Falls, Times Square, and Hawaii.  There are some that aren’t so vacation-esque but still worthy of viewing.  Very cool.

Big Screen
I have recently became the owner of a big screen TV. The tv is not new though, its a rear-projection (I believe is the term I am looking for).  Currently, our living room contains a 32″ LCD tv with an HDMI connection, component connections, and RCA connections.  The big screen tv has component connections.  This made me want to compare the difference between the component and HDMI connection.

HDMI connection makes a digital-to-digital connection (DVD player/Cable box [digital] through a digital line to a tv [digital]).  This seems like it would be the best way to approach the situation at hand, keeping everything in one format so you have zero loss of picture quality.  According to eZine.com, BlueJeanCable.com, and Engadget.com HDMI isn’t all it seems to be.  It seems the devices on the ends of the cable and not the connection itself is the determining factor.

Component connection makes a digital-to-analog-to-digital connection (DVD player/Cable box [digital] through a analog component line to a tv [digital]).  Just by looking at the way the signal is created, it would seem most logical that HDMI is better but, as stated previously it has to do with the device quality on the end of both ends of the connection.

We get digital cable service from Time Warner and boy, oh boy do those cable boxes suck or what!  We have the HD DVR cable box and although it has worked for the most part, reaction from the remote to the device itself is SLOW.  I am not sure if it is the remote or the box itself that is causing the issue but, Time Warner has nothing better than can offer.  With that said, I would say the quality on the one end of our current HDMI connection is bad.  The LCD tv it is connection to is made by Polaroid (I didn’t know they even made TVs until my roommate brought it home).  The TV is really nice.  The casing can be modified so that the DVD player built into the TV can be moved around from the side opposite of the connections OR placed on the top of the tv (I know, cool right?).  THe DVD player unfortunately does not work (possibility that someone shoved a dvd in on top of another DVD [human error...] or just bad electronics).  The actual picture is excellent on the tv though.  I would say the HDMI connect from the TV is really good.

I guess we will just have to test out the connections when the big screen arrives.
